On Saturday, August 1st, 2020 we teamed up with the Ocean Defender Alliance-Hawaii to host a massive beach cleanup at Waiahole Beach Park, located on the east side of Oahu, close to Chinaman’s Hat. We had 18 volunteers and 3 representatives from the Parks Division join us. We were very thankful for the help from the Parks Division as they supplied a large flatbed truck to remove the debris. Together we removed over 3,000 lbs of garbage. It took some serious team work to remove the hundreds of pounds of abandoned fishing nets! Other items removed include car parts, lots of large fishing buoys, 18 car tires, a tractor tire, a hydraulic lift, and lots of various plastics. We also removed several homemade fishing traps. This was especially important to us as we have seen 17 dead scalloped hammerhead pups on the beach over the last few months. Our haul was pretty impressive as we filled both the flatbed truck and the bed of a pickup truck. We are working closely with DOBOR to coordinate the removal of the abandoned boats. We will continue to keep Waiahole Beach Park on our list of cleanup locations as it tends to accumulate a large amount of debris fairly quickly.
